Paris Olympics: Neeraj Chopra Qualifies For Javelin Final with Season’s Best Throw

Paris: Defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra showcased his dominance once again as he effortlessly qualified for the javelin final with a stunning first-round throw of 89.34 meters. The 26-year-old’s season’s best effort not only secured his place in the final but also sent a clear message to his competitors.

While Chopra soared, compatriot Kishore Jena, the Asian Games silver medalist, fell short with a best attempt of 80.73 meters, failing to meet the qualification standard of 84.00 meters. Jena, who had previously expressed considering retirement after a challenging 2022, has found inspiration in Chopra’s success.

The final promises to be a spectacle with a strong field of contenders. Czech rival Jakub Vadlejch, boasting a personal best of 99.88 meters, also secured his spot with a single impressive throw of 85.63 meters. Germany’s Julian Weber wasn’t far behind, registering a strong 87.78 meters.

Neeraj Chopra’s ability to rise to the occasion at major events has made him a global sensation. His status as a gold medal favorite is unprecedented for an Indian track and field athlete.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Grenada’s Anderson Peters joined Chopra and Vadlejch in automatic qualification, both with season’s best throws of 86.59 meters and 88.63 meters respectively. The high-quality qualification round sets the stage for an unforgettable final.

India’s Olympic campaign has faced setbacks with multiple fourth-place finishes and a bronze medal loss in mixed skeet. However, Chopra’s exceptional performance offers a glimmer of hope for the nation.

The javelin final is scheduled for August 8, where Chopra will aim to defend his Olympic title.
