TMC Releases Manifesto, Promises to Scrap CAA and NRC

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) released its manifesto on Wednesday ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, outlining a series of promises. Among them, the TMC has promised to abolish the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and discontinue the National Register for Citizens (NRC), both of which have sparked nationwide debate and protests.

Dubbed “Didir Shopoth” (Didi’s promises), the manifesto features ten crucial points, including the assurance of 100 days of guaranteed work, an increase in minimum wage, housing for the impoverished, and distribution of 10 free LPG cylinders for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Additionally, the TMC pledges to provide free ration delivery, enhance old-age pension, implement measures to stabilize fuel prices and introduce a student credit card for pursuing higher education.

Derek O’Brien, TMC Parliamentary leader in the Rajya Sabha, emphasized the party’s commitment to these initiatives, asserting that they will be implemented upon TMC’s involvement in the INDIA alliance forming the Union government.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her opposition to the BJP-led central government’s stance on CAA, NRC, and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). She reiterated her stance during recent Eid celebrations in Kolkata, stressing the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights and condemning the divisive policies.
