Odisha Bans Single-Use Plastics Inside Sanctuaries, National Parks & Tiger Reserves

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards protecting wildlife and their habitats, Odisha has announced a ban on single-use plastics within all sanctuaries, national parks, and tiger reserves. The ban, effective from April 1, 2024, aims to curb plastic pollution and its detrimental impact on the state’s rich biodiversity.

The directive was issued by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) for Wildlife and Chief Wildlife Warden, Susanta Nanda. As per the order, carrying or using single-use plastic items will be strictly prohibited inside protected areas.

Recognizing the needs of tourists, the forest department will provide alternative drinking water facilities at various locations within the sanctuaries and parks. Additionally, visitors can opt for purchasing reusable plastic water bottles at park entry points, with a potential refund system in place.

The PCCF has urged visitors to dispose of any existing plastic packaging they carry in designated waste bins. The order further emphasizes proper disposal of plastic waste generated within protected areas, adhering to existing guidelines. Local authorities will be consulted to ensure efficient waste management.

To ensure the success of the ban, the PCCF has warned of penalties for violations. Visitors found carrying or using single-use plastics inside protected areas may face arrest, fines, or even jail time.
