Instagram Adds New iOS Lock Screen Widget for Quick Story Sharing

Instagram has quietly introduced a new feature on its iOS app aimed at streamlining the process of posting Stories. The update includes a lock screen widget named “Story Camera,” designed to expedite the creation and posting of Stories directly from the lock screen.

Reportedly, the widget, appearing as a 1×1 grid with a simple circle and plus icon, enables users to access the Instagram Story Camera instantly. By clicking on the widget, users can swiftly capture photos or videos and share them as Stories, or import images from their gallery.

Although the widget offers convenience, users should note a limitation: it prohibits access to the native iPhone camera app, potentially affecting image quality. Nevertheless, for users prioritizing speed over image resolution, this feature is a viable option, further enhanced by Instagram’s array of in-app filters.

While Instagram has not formally announced the update, numerous users have taken to social media platforms to share their discovery. According to reports, the widget has already begun rolling out and is expected to reach all users worldwide in the coming days. It’s worth noting that iOS 16 or higher is required to utilize lock screen widgets.

In addition to this enhancement, rumours suggest Instagram is working on a new feature named “Friend Map.” This feature purportedly allows users to view the real-time locations of their friends on a map, provided they share their location data. “Friend Map” could potentially offer users the ability to leave and read notes, enhancing the platform’s interactive experience.
