Apple Shelves Electric Car Manufacturing Plan, To Focus on AI

Apple abandoned its decade-long plan to build an electric car. According to sources, Apple made the disclosure internally on Tuesday. Around 2,000 employees were working on Apple’s electric car project. But the announcement has not been made public.

According to People, the decision was shared by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the electric car project of Apple.

Many employees on the electric car team, known as the Special Projects Group, or SPG, will now be shifted to the Artificial Intelligence division of Apple to work on generative AI projects, which is the present key priority for the company.

The Apple car team also has several hundred hardware engineers and vehicle designers. So, there may be layoffs.

Elon Musk, head of Tesla, shared a post on the X with a saluting emoji and a cigarette.

The multibillion-dollar electric car effort of Apple was named Project Titan. Apple started working on a car around 2014, planning for a car with a limousine-like interior and voice-guided navigation.
