In November 2023, a deepfake video featuring Rashmika Mandanna’s face on British-Indian influencer Zara Patel’s body went viral, sparking a broader conversation on the misuse of technology. The deepfake video raised concerns, leading influential celebrities to speak out against such inappropriate use of digital manipulation.

Delhi Police announced the arrest of Eemani Naveen, a 23-year-old B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh, in connection with the case. The accused’s fan following on Instagram surged from 90,000 to 108,000 within two weeks, thanks to the deepfake video. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) filed a complaint, leading to a case registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, including forgery and cybercrime.

Rashmika Mandanna emphasized the importance of consent regarding the use or manipulation of one’s image, urging others to be vigilant. The successful arrest of the mastermind behind the deepfake video serves as a reminder that action will be taken against those engaging in such activities.
