Father-in-Law Rapes and Sets Daughter-in-Law on Fire Over Dowry Dispute; Arrested

Ballia: A man and his son were arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Balia for their alleged involvement in a dowry death case. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, lost her life after being set on fire, and her father-in-law is accused of raping her before the incident.

The arrested individuals, Shankar Dayal Chaube and his son Anand Chaube have been accused of demanding a dowry of ₹50,000 and a gold chain from the woman. The harassment persisted until June 25 when she refused to comply with their demands.

Tragically, the situation escalated as the two men reportedly doused the woman with inflammable oil and set her ablaze. Suffering severe burn injuries, she fought for her life for about a week before passing away on July 3.

Before her untimely demise, the brave woman provided a statement to a magistrate at the hospital, revealing the harrowing details of her ordeal, including the accusation of rape by her father-in-law.

The police responded promptly, filing an FIR against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Bairiya Police Station. The investigation is ongoing to bring justice to the deceased and her family.

Such incidents highlight the urgent need to address dowry-related violence and ensure the safety and protection of women in society.
