British PM Rishi Sunak’s Party Loses Two By-Polls Ahead of General Elections

Ahead of coming general elections, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced two major setbacks to his leadership as the Opposition Labour Party defeated Conservative candidates to win by-elections in England on Friday.

Labour’s Dan Egan won the House of Commons seat of Kingswood, and the party’s Gen Kitchen won Wellingborough, in the East Midlands region of England.

It was a major blow for the Conservatives as well as Sunak as in the 2019 general elections both these seats were won by the Conservatives under Boris Johnson.

The re-organised anti-immigration Brexit Party, came third in these by-elections, ahead of the Liberal Democrats and Green Party. This will put pressure on the Conservatives on contentious issues such as migration.
