World Hearing Day: Know Its History And Significance

New Delhi: Every year, March 3 is observed as World Hearing Day. The event is carried out by the World Health Organization and its partners to raise awareness of hearing loss, promote ear and hearing care, and urge action to solve hearing loss and associated concerns.

The day emphasises the significance of integrating ear and hearing care into primary care as an element of universal health coverage.

History

The day was commemorated for the first time in 2007. Earlier, the day was originally known as International Ear Care Day. Later, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared World Hearing Day in 2016. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually on March 3.

According to the UN organisation specialising in global health and safety, communication is a fundamental human right, and persons with disabilities and disorders may find it difficult to communicate.

World Hearing Day 2023: Significance

World Hearing Day encourages hearing care since the WHO estimates that by 2050, almost 1 in 4 billion will have some or other kind of hearing loss.
