Karnataka Man Racks Up Cricket Betting Debt Of Rs 1 Cr, His Wife Commits Suicide

Bengaluru: An engineer, Darshan Babu, piled up a huge debt of over one crore rupees by betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) games since 2021.

Tired of the constant harassment by creditors, his 23-year-old wife, Ranjitha committed suicide. Ranjitha’s body was found hanging at her home in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on March 18. According to the family, Darshan had a debt of over Rs 1 crore because of his cricket betting addiction.

Darshan serves as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga. His betting addiction took a major toll on the couple’s finances.

Darshan allegedly borrowed over Rs 1.5 crore to place bets and he lost the money. He managed to return back a portion o fthe loan but according to investigating police officials, he still has a pending loan of over Rs 84 lakh.

Ranjitha married Darshan in 2020. In his complaint, Ranjitha’s father Venkatesh said that constant harassment by moneylenders led to her suicide. He has also named 13 men who had allegedly lent the money to Darshan.

Darshan and Ranjitha have a two-year-old son.
