Delhi Women’s Commission Takes Suo-Motu Action on Online Trolling of Shubman Gill’s Sister

New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal has recently taken suo-motu cognizance of the disturbing incident involving online trolling directed at Shahneel, the sister of cricketer Shubman Gill. The DCW has promptly issued a notice to the Delhi Police, urging them to register an FIR (First Information Report) regarding this matter.

In a tweet, Maliwal shared a copy of the notice, emphasizing the DCW’s proactive stance. She stated, “Taking suo-moto cognisance of the online trolling and abuse of cricketer #ShubmanGill’s sister, we have issued a notice to Delhi Police seeking registration of FIR. Police is to file a detailed action taken report by 26th May. Such criminals won’t be allowed to get away with this.

The notice highlights the distressing nature of the threats of rape and assault faced by Shubman Gill’s sister on popular social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. It explicitly requests a copy of the FIR and a detailed Action Taken Report by May 26.

Maliwal raised this issue on Monday, expressing her strong condemnation towards those who engaged in trolling Shubman Gill’s sister following his team Gujarat Titans’ victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. With a convincing six-wicket win, Gujarat Titans effectively eliminated Royal Challengers Bangalore from the IPL.

The DCW’s swift action and Maliwal’s public statement demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding individuals from online harassment. By involving the Delhi Police and demanding accountability, they aim to ensure that such reprehensible behaviour does not go unpunished.
