Security Forces Modify G20 TWG Itinerary in Jammu & Kashmir Amidst Terrorist Threats

Srinagar: In light of security concerns, the G20 Tourism Working Group (TWG) conference itinerary in Jammu and Kashmir has gone through last-minute modifications.

Security forces suspected that terrorist organizations had conspired to orchestrate an attack similar to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks during the G20 summit in Gulmarg. These suspicions were reportedly based on information provided by a detained individual known as an over-ground worker (OGW), who had connections to a luxurious hotel in the region.

To ensure the safety of the G20 event, enhanced security measures have been implemented around the conference venue. Furthermore, the Kashmir Police issued a public advisory cautioning against suspicious international mobile numbers, which were allegedly being used to disseminate rumours regarding the G20 meeting in the area.

Over-ground workers (OGWs) are individuals who provide logistical support, financial aid, shelter, and other necessary resources to assist armed groups and insurgency movements like Hizb-ul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Muhammad in Jammu and Kashmir.

One of the arrests made as part of a pre-G20 crackdown was Farooq Ahmad Wani, a resident of Haigam Sopore in Baramulla. Wani worked as a driver at a renowned five-star hotel in Gulmarg and was found to be associated with terrorist organizations as an over-ground worker (OGW). Sources revealed that Wani had direct contact with officials from the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI across the border.

During interrogation, Wani disclosed that the terrorists aimed to infiltrate the hotel and carry out an attack targeting the occupants, including foreign dignitaries, similar to the tactics employed during the Mumbai attacks at the Taj Hotel. According to sources, the OGW indicated that the terrorists were planning simultaneous attacks on two to three locations during the G20 summit in Kashmir.

Consequently, comprehensive surveillance using CCTV cameras and drones has been implemented across Kashmir, particularly in Srinagar, to monitor movements and enhance security measures.
