Renowned Doordarshan News Presenter Gitanjali Aiyar Passes Away

New Delhi: Gitanjali Aiyar, a renowned figure in the world of Indian broadcasting, passed away on Wednesday, June 7.

Having joined Doordarshan, the national broadcaster, in 1971, she became one of the pioneers of English news presentation on the channel. Throughout her remarkable 30-year tenure, she received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best Anchor Person award on four occasions.

In recognition of her exceptional work, achievements, and contributions, Gitanjali Aiyar was honoured with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989. Notably, she held the esteemed position of Head of Major Donors at the World Wide Fund, India, further highlighting her dedication to environmental causes.

Gitanjali Aiyar pursued her education at Kolkata’s esteemed Loreto College, where she obtained her undergraduate degree in English. Additionally, she earned a diploma from the National School of Drama, which further enriched her expertise and skills.

Following her illustrious career as a news presenter, Gitanjali Aiyar ventured into various domains such as corporate communications, government liaison, and marketing. Notably, she played a pivotal role as a consultant at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), contributing to their success. Alongside her professional endeavours, she also showcased her talent in the television serial “Khandaan”.

The passing of Gitanjali Aiyar marks a significant loss for the broadcasting industry and those who admired her exceptional contributions. Her legacy as a trailblazer and her remarkable achievements will forever be remembered and celebrated.
