India’s First Underwater Metro Service Opens For Public In Kolkata

Kolkata: Commuters in Kolkata witnessed a historic moment today as India’s first underwater metro line commenced public operations. The highly anticipated East-West metro corridor, featuring a 520-meter stretch beneath the Hooghly River, began service with enthusiastic passengers eager to experience the marvel of engineering.

Amidst cheers and patriotic slogans of ‘Vande Bharat’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, the inaugural journey commenced simultaneously from Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations at 7 AM.

Metro Railway Kolkata shared the milestone on social media, announcing the arrival of the first commercial service at Majerhat station on the Purple Line.

Passengers expressed their gratitude, with one thanking Prime Minister Modi for elevating India’s pride. Excitement buzzed among travellers, highlighting the ease of ticket procurement and the swift commute.

The underwater tunnel adorned with captivating blue LED lights mirrors the Hooghly River’s depths. Operating on weekdays with trains every 12 to 15 minutes, the service ensures convenient travel, with the last train departing at 9.45 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kolkata’s metro operations on March 6. Besides the underwater metro, he unveiled key metro sections, including the Majerhat station, a testament to architectural ingenuity bridging railways, platforms, and canals.
