Thiruvananthapuram: In a recent unfortunate incident in Kerala, a distressing trend of stray dog attacks continues. An eight-year-old girl was viciously attacked by three canines at her residence, resulting in her hospitalization. This incident occurred in the same town where an 11-year-old autistic boy lost his life after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs on June 11.
The incident involving the eight-year-old, named Jhanvi, took place in the yard of her house in Kannur district’s Muzhappilangad. Upon her desperate cries for help, nearby people rushed to her aid, causing the dogs to flee. Jhanvi sustained injuries to her hands and legs and has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
In another alarming incident, which occurred in Kollam district, a stray dog attacked children outside their school. Disturbing visuals captured the dog charging into a group of students, biting one of them. The injured student fell to the ground and tried to defend themselves by kicking the canine away. Ultimately, the dog fled when other students hurled stones and their bags at it.
Tragically, on June 11, an 11-year-old autistic boy named Nihal faced a similar fate in Muzhappilangad. He was attacked by a pack of stray dogs and despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Responding to these distressing incidents, Kerala’s Minister for Local Self-Governments, MB Rajesh, expressed the need to review certain provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The minister also stated that the state would approach the Supreme Court once again, seeking permission to deal with stray dogs that pose a threat to human life, to safeguard public safety.
