Indore & Surat Crowned Cleanest Cities, Maharashtra Tops Best-Performing States in Swachh Survekshan 2023

New Delhi: Indore and Surat secured the top positions as the cleanest cities in India, with Navi Mumbai maintaining its third position, as per the results of the annual cleanliness survey announced by the Central government. Maharashtra claimed the top spot in the ‘best-performing states’ category of the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards at the event, attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries. Indore’s remarkable achievement marked its seventh consecutive win as the cleanest city.

In the category of cities with less than 1 lakh population, Maharashtra’s Sasvad was recognized as the cleanest city. Chhattisgarh’s Patan and Maharashtra’s Lonavala secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Varanasi emerged as the best and cleanest Ganga town, followed by Prayagraj. Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh clinched the top rank in the cleanest cantonment boards category.

The Swachh Survekshan 2023 witnessed the participation of 4,447 urban local bodies, receiving a substantial 12 crore citizen responses. The government claims it to be the world’s largest cleanliness survey.
