Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Efforts: Hope Rekindled as Backup Tunnel Construction Progresses

Uttarkashi: Rescue efforts are underway in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, to save the 41 workers trapped in an under-construction tunnel for over 240 hours. Authorities are constructing a backup tunnel from Barkot, with a three-meter diameter tunnel, of which eight meters have been completed.

Drone surveys faced challenges due to debris obstruction, and a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) robot couldn’t climb the tunnel slope.

Earlier on Monday, a six-inch alternate pipe reached the trapped workers, delivering a special diet, including khichdi and fruits. A phone with a charger was sent for communication.

Endoscopic cameras captured visuals of workers, confirming their safety. International tunnelling experts, including Arnold Dix, are overseeing the operation, expressing confidence in the rescue. The US-based augur machine, initially snagged, is back in operation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a late-night review of the rescue operation, staying in constant contact with local authorities. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Prem Chand Agarwal is expected to visit the site for a firsthand assessment at 1 PM.
