5850 Posts of Judges Vacant in District Courts; 333 Vacancies in HCs

New Delhi: A total of 5850 posts of judges are vacant in district courts of India. In the High Courts of the country, 333 posts of judges are yet to be filled up, while the Supreme Court has six vacancies for judges. This was informed by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice in the Rajya Sabha.

The total sanctioned strength of judges in district courts in India is 25,042. But till December 19, there was a vacancy of 5,850 judges in these district courts.

Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju told Parliament that, “From 01.01.2020 till 19.12.2022, 12 judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court of India. In the case of high courts, 351 judges have been appointed in various high courts of the country. As of 19.12.2022, against the sanctioned strength of 34 judges, 28 judges are working in the Supreme Court of India, leaving a vacancy of 6 judges. In the case of the High Courts, against the sanctioned strength of 1108 judges, 775 judges are working in the High Courts, and there is a vacancy of 333 judges to be filled.”
