Do You Know what is Bomb Cyclone, the Blizzard Threatening America

Christmas and New Year festivities in America are threatened by a bomb cyclone. US President Joe Biden on Friday advised Americans to travel to their families and friends right away, as this winter storm is approaching fast. This storm is expected to gain strength and worsen into a rare phenomenon known as a bomb cyclone.

This bomb cyclone is expected to result in arctic blasts bringing extreme cold, heavy snow, and intense wind across the US this week.

Science Behind:

A bomb cyclone is formed when the air near the earth’s surface rises quickly in the atmosphere, triggering a sudden drop in barometric pressure, at least 24 millibars within 24 hours. Lower air pressure leads to a stronger storm.

Finding its similarity with the sudden drop in pressure when a bomb goes off, meteorologists have termed this phenomenon a bomb cyclone. It is also described as “explosive cyclogenesis” and “bombogenesis” by meteorologists.

The bomb cyclone involves extreme cold winds that may drop temperatures to dangerous lows far below zero.
