Odisha: Woman Sentenced to 8 Years for Killing Kids, Husband Gets Jail Time for Abetment

Kandhamal: A local court in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Tuesday sentenced a woman to eight years of rigorous imprisonment for killing her two minor children and her own attempted suicide. The woman’s husband has also been convicted, receiving five years of imprisonment for abetting her suicide and torturing her.

The convict, M Bhagyalaxmi of Baliguda area, took drastic measures in 2021 by throwing her 9-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter into a well, driven by resentment towards her husband, M Rajesh, due to his extramarital affair.

Fortunately, the children were rescued by Raikia fire personnel and rushed to a nearby hospital. However, despite their valiant efforts, both children succumbed to their injuries.

The court case that followed shed light on the domestic turmoil that preceded the tragedy. Bhagyalaxmi faced physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband, compounded by the pain of his alleged infidelity. These factors, the court concluded, were significant contributing factors to her actions.
