CBI Set to Take Over Balasore Train Accident Case Investigation

Balasore: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to take over the investigation into the tragic Balasore train accident. The accident, which occurred in Odisha, resulted in the death of at least 275 people and left 1,100 injured. The CBI will assume control of the case registered by the Odisha Police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Railways Act.

As per the procedure, the CBI will re-register the local police FIR as its own case and initiate a thorough investigation. The case is expected to be assigned to the Special Crime Unit at the CBI’s Delhi Headquarters. During their probe, the CBI can modify the charges in the FIR as necessary.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the recommendation for a CBI investigation into the triple train accident that resulted in the loss of 275 lives and injuries to over 1,000 people. Railway officials suspect possible sabotage and tampering with the electronic interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains, as the cause of the accident.

The collision involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, both carrying more than 2,500 passengers and a goods train loaded with iron ore. It occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore. The accident caused severe damage to 21 derailed coaches, leading to the entrapment of numerous passengers.

The CBI’s intervention aims to uncover the truth behind this devastating incident, ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
