Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal Receives Coveted GI Tag

New Delhi: The “Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal” has been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication Registry, a division of the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This recognition is a testament to the exceptional qualities of its extraordinary taste, quick cooking characteristics, natural resistance to pests and diseases, and long shelf life.

Kanteimundi Brinjal is indigenous to the Nayagarh district of Odisha, where it has been cultivated for over a century. The brinjal is named after the Kantilo region of Nayagarh, where it was first discovered. The brinjal is characterized by its small, prickly thorns, which cover the stem, leaves, and fruit calyx.

It has a distinctive taste that is unlike any other brinjal variety. The brinjal is also known for its quick cooking characteristics, making it a popular choice for stir-fries and other dishes. The brinjal is also naturally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance crop for farmers.

The Kanteimundi Brinjal has a long shelf life of up to 10-14 days after harvest. This makes it a popular choice for commercial growers, as it can be easily transported and stored without losing its quality.
