Odisha Boasts Strong Post-Covid Growth, Governor Highlights Economic Gains in Budget Speech

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s economy has shown impressive resilience and growth in the post-pandemic period, according to Governor Rabhubar Das’s address during the opening day of the state assembly’s budget session.

Impressive Economic Growth: Governor Das emphasized the exemplary economic growth of Odisha post-COVID, citing the Advance Estimates 2022-23 of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). The state has achieved an annual average growth rate of 6.47% at 2011-12 prices from 2012-13 to 2022-23, surpassing the National Annual Average Growth rate of 5.59%. According to the Advance Estimate, Odisha’s economy is projected to grow by 7.8% in 2022-23, exceeding the national estimate of 7%.

Per Capita Income Surge: The Per Capita income in Odisha has seen a significant rise of 16.9% in 2022-23, reaching Rs 1.51 lakh from Rs 1.29 lakh in 2021-22, reflecting the robust economic recovery in the state.

Decline in Unemployment Rate: Governor Das highlighted a positive trend in unemployment, with Odisha’s unemployment rate dropping from 7.1% in 2017-18 to 6.2% in 2019-20, showcasing improved employment conditions.

Sector-wise Growth: In terms of sector-wise growth, the agriculture and allied sectors recorded a growth rate of 6% in 2022-23, while the industries and service sectors achieved growth rates of 6.1% and 8.8%, respectively.

Government Initiatives: Governor Das commended the Odisha Government’s initiatives, including the Puri Parikrama (Shree Jagannath Heritage Corridor) project and the Samaleswari project. The government prioritized the renovation and redevelopment of religious sites to preserve cultural identity across the state. Additionally, the Shree Jagannath Express Bus Service under the LAccMI scheme was launched to facilitate devotees’ visits to Puri Jagannath Temple from all 30 districts.

Infrastructure Investment: The government’s commitment to infrastructure development is evident in the inauguration of the Puri Parikrama project and the dedication of the Samaleswari project, both aimed at preserving cultural heritage. The Samaleswari project, carried out at a cost of Rs 200 crore, further contributes to the state’s overall development.
