Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver In 2022 World Weightlifting Championships

Bogotá: Mirabai Chanu defeated China’s Hou Zhihua in Colombia for the Tokyo 2020 title and grabbed silver at the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships.

Zhihua lifted a total of 198 kg (89kg in the snatch and 109 kg in the clean and jerk), while Mirabai hoisted 200 kg (87 kg in the snatch and 113 kg in the clean and jerk).

However, the gold medal was won by Jiang Huihua of China, who lifted a combined weight of 206 kg in total (93kg plus 113kg).

A gold medalist at the 2017 World Championships with a lift of 194kg (85 kg plus 109 kg), Mirabai earned her second medal there this year.

The top weightlifter from India, Mirabai, who just earned the gold medal for the Commonwealth Games 2022, got off to a bad start by only lifting 85 kg. The 28-year-old was unsuccessful in her second (87 kg) effort before succeeding in her third (87 kg). After struggling in her second effort at the clean and jerk, Mirabai managed to recover in time to finish with a combined weight of 113 kg to tie Jiang in the clean and jerk.

Hou Zhihua, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, appeared to be having trouble as she lifted less than her snatch personal best of 96 kg and clean and jerk personal best national record of 118 kg.
