‘She Probably Has No Idea’: Neeraj Chopra on His Mother’s Viral Fame

Neeraj Chopra has said that he is confident his mother is unaware of her newfound internet fame following her heartfelt remarks after the javelin event at the Paris Olympics 2024, where Neeraj secured a silver medal behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.

In a Q&A session hosted by Olympics.com, Neeraj mentioned that his mother, who grew up in a village and continues to live a simple life, is not active on social media and avoids consuming much news.

After the event, she had commented that Nadeem was like her own child, and expressed happiness over Neeraj’s silver win.

Her heartfelt words quickly went viral, receiving widespread praise from fans in both India and Pakistan, with former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar among those commending her.

Neeraj shared that his mother always speaks from the heart, understanding that athletes receive love and support from their inner circles, regardless of nationality.

“I am sure she doesn’t know she has become an internet sensation. She doesn’t use a phone or watch the news, so she wouldn’t be aware of all this,” Neeraj said.
