Congress Accuses Govt Of Targeting ‘Alternate Media,’ Claims Social Media Clampdown

New Delhi: The Congress party has accused the Modi government of targeting “alternate media” after four accounts on the social media platform X were reportedly withheld.

According to Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, one of the deleted posts was related to electoral bonds, which she referred to as “the largest scam in independent India.” Shrinate alleged that donors to the ruling party through electoral bonds were favoured in winning contracts, while those facing investigations were allegedly exempted after donating. She criticized PM Modi, labelling him as “the champion of corruption” who facilitated such practices.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Shrinate criticized mainstream media for becoming “cheerleaders of the government” and accused them of echoing the government’s narrative rather than asking critical questions. She expressed concerns over the government’s control over social media platforms, alleging instances of “shadow banning” and suppression of voices critical of the administration. Shrinate cited examples of journalists and activists whose social media handles were suspended during the farmers’ protests, along with the suspension of YouTube channels and creators discussing issues like EVM-VVPAT.

Shrinate accused the government of undermining the freedom of speech and expression by restricting the creation of videos and targeting alternate media platforms.
