Myanmar Shifts Nobel laureate Suu Kyi from Jail to House Arrest

Myanmar’s military government shifted former leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from jail to house arrest. “Since the weather is extremely hot, it is not only for Aung San Suu Kyi … For all those, who need necessary precautions, especially elderly prisoners, we are working to protect them from heatstroke,” Myanmar military spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun was quoted to have said to the media.

Suu Kyi, 78, has been detained by the Myanmar military regime since her government was overthrown in the 2021 coup.

She faces a 27 years jail term for charges she denies. World leaders and pro-democracy activists have repeatedly demanded for her release.
