Newly-Constructed Parliament Building to be Inaugurated by PM Modi on May 28

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly-constructed Parliament building on May 28, according to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The building, symbolizing a ‘self-reliant India,’ has been completed in record time with a focus on quality construction, as stated by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

During a meeting with PM Modi on Thursday, Birla extended an invitation to inaugurate the multi-billion dollar structure. Earlier reports had also suggested that the Prime Minister would inaugurate the new sansad (Parliament) by the end of this month, citing informed sources.

The inauguration of the new building coincides with the ruling BJP government’s celebration of nine years in power on May 29. Several events are planned to commemorate the occasion, with the upcoming Monsoon session likely to be held in July at the new building.

Spread over 65,000 square meters and costing ₹970 crore, the new Parliament building features two spacious halls for the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, a modern Constitution Hall, a library, as well as offices for lawmakers and committee rooms for meetings.

The Lok Sabha Hall, designed with a peacock-themed motif, can accommodate 888 members, while the Rajya Sabha Hall can seat 384 members, adorned with a lotus motif. In the event of a joint sitting of both Houses, the Lok Sabha chamber can accommodate a total of 1,280 members.

The foundation stone for the building was laid by PM Modi in December 2020. However, construction work on the four-storey structure faced delays due to the Covid pandemic. Last year, in July, PM Modi unveiled the National Emblem cast on the roof of the revamped Parliament building.

The current Parliament building, which was completed in 1927 and is 96 years old, has been deemed inadequate for the present-day requirements of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Resolutions were passed by both Houses urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament, leading to the realization of the ambitious project.
