Trinamool Congress Shuns PM Modi’s ‘Self-Centric’ Parliament Inauguration

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its decision to boycott the upcoming inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building, scheduled for May 28.

TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making the event all about himself. O’Brien emphasized that Parliament holds significant importance as the cornerstone of Indian democracy, embodying old traditions, values, and rules.

O’Brien expressed his disappointment, stating that PM Modi fails to grasp the essence of Parliament, as he views the inauguration of the new building as a personal affair centred around his own image. Consequently, the TMC has chosen to abstain from the event, asserting its belief in the necessity of upholding parliamentary principles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will conduct the inauguration ceremony, despite objections from opposition leaders who argue that the head of the legislature should be responsible for this task.

The new Parliament building, constructed by Tata Projects Ltd, boasts four floors and has the capacity to accommodate over 1,200 Members of Parliament. Notable features of the building include a magnificent constitution hall showcasing India’s democratic heritage, a members’ lounge, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas, and ample parking space. Furthermore, the marshals of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will be adorned in a new dress code within the new premises.
