$1.4 million fine on Air India by the US Govt

A hefty fine of $1.4 million was imposed on Tata-group-owned Air India on Monday by the US government for “extreme delays” in refunding passengers for canceled flights or significantly changed flight schedules.

US authorities have also slapped fines on five other airlines on Monday. Frontier, a US airline has to pay the highest penalty worth $2.2 million. The other fined airlines are TAP Portugal, AeroMexico, El Al of Israel, and Avianca of Colombia.

DOT said that most of the fines will be paid directly to the US government and the remaining portion will be given to the passengers in addition to the refunds.

As per American law, any airline has to make cash refunds to passengers whose flights to or from America have been canceled or changed significantly. Airlines cannot force an affected passenger to accept vouchers in place of cash refunds.
