Mizoram Requests ₹10 Cr Assistance for Displaced Individuals from Manipur Violence

Aizawl: Mizoram’s state government has urgently requested ₹10 crore from the Central government to provide relief to more than 10,000 displaced individuals seeking refuge in the state due to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga has personally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice in the past month, emphasizing the need for financial assistance to support the 10,700 affected individuals.

However, there has been no response from the Union government thus far, according to Mizoram’s Home Minister Lalchamliana, who also oversees the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department.

To address this critical situation, Mizoram intends to send a delegation led by Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte to Delhi, aiming to seek financial aid from the Central government. Mizoram has already provided shelter to a significant number of refugees, including 34,278 individuals from Myanmar’s Chin state and 773 refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

The refugees from Myanmar, including women and children, have been accommodated in various districts of Mizoram following the military coup in their home country in February 2021.
