NMC asked for the list of doctors prescribed ‘Dolo 650’ tablets with gifts

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked the Income tax department for a list of doctors who have prescribed paracetamol pill ‘Dolo 650’. The Bangalore-based micro lab that manufactures the drug revealed after a tax audit that the company had spent nearly Rs 1,000 crore to influence doctors, which resulted in the drug being widely sold.

The NMC has asked the Income Tax Department for details of all these doctors who allegedly received free gifts from six pharmaceutical companies, including Micro Labs, which manufactures Dolo 650.

The income department’s administrative body, the central Board of Direct taxes (CBDT), in July found the maker of the widely used Dolo-650 tablet to be indulging in illegal transactions and spending Rs. 1,000 crore to influence its products to medical professionals and doctors.

On July 6, the Income Tax department raided 36 addresses in nine states against Bangalore-based micro Labs Ltd. The NMC then wrote a letter on August 3 to CBDT chairman Nitin Gupta requesting him to provide the name, registration number and address of the doctor concerned. So that information can be forwarded to the concerned State Medical Council for necessary action.

In this letter, the NMC mentioned that there is violation of Article 6.8 of the Medical Council of India Regulations- 2002. This Act regulates pharmaceutical companies and regulates the conduct of doctors.
