Undertrial Prisoner Dies During Treatment In Kandhamal Dist

Phulbani: An undertrial prisoner died during treatment at the Kandhamal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Abhiram Dagyal of Dimirikuda village in Phiringia block of the district.

According to sources, Abhiram he had surrendered before the police following the issue of a non-bailable warrant against him in a ganja smuggling case. After arrest, he was lodged in the Phulbani Jail under judicial custody.

According to the jail authorities, Abhiram was admitted to the hospital when he developed some ailment. He succumbed to his illness in the hospital.

But family members of the deceased alleged that he suffered torture at the hands of the police which led to his death.

Phulbani SDPO Suprasanna Mallik said the autopsy report of the deceased will confirm whether his death was due to police excess or because of some ailments.
