Odisha Postman Penalised ₹20,000 for Late Delivery of Letter

Kandhamal: A postman in Odisha’s Kandhamal district has been penalised ₹20,000 for delivering a letter late, causing the recipient to miss a crucial court date.

The district consumer disputes redressal forum directed Priyatam Majhi, the postman, to compensate Priyabrat Sahu, the complainant, for the delayed delivery.

According to reports, Majhi delivered a letter to Sahu ten days behind schedule, approximately two years ago. The letter contained information about a court case scheduled for November 30, 2022, before the Station Information Commission (SIC). Due to the late delivery, Sahu missed the hearing, resulting in the dismissal of his case by the SIC.

Sahu filed a complaint with the district consumer disputes forum, seeking compensation for the missed opportunity due to the delayed delivery. During the hearing, Majhi reportedly admitted to negligence in delivering the letter in time.

The forum, presided over by Purna Chandra Mishra, ruled in favour of Sahu and directed Majhi to pay compensation for the inconvenience caused. As per reports, Majhi has already paid the ₹20,000 penalty to Sahu.
