Odisha Govt Bans Religious Processions in Sambalpur For a Year Following Hanuman Jayanti Violence

Sambalpur: In a bid to maintain communal harmony and ensure peace in the Sambalpur district of western Odisha, the State government has implemented a ban on religious processions for a year. The decision comes after the outbreak of communal violence during a Hanuman Jayanti procession earlier this year.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo stated that the police administration has banned both Muharram and Hanuman Jayanti processions for the specified period. However, it’s important to note that processions related to other religions will continue as before.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Peace Committee, with a focus on maintaining law and order in the district. The aim is to ensure that religious festivals can be celebrated with enthusiasm, but without the permission for any processions to prevent potential clashes.

Last year, during a Hanuman Jayanti procession, there was a violent incident where stones were pelted by a rival faction. This led to over 100 arrests, with some individuals still in jail. To control the situation and restore normalcy, the Sambalpur administration had sealed the district borders and imposed a curfew while suspending internet services.

The authorities have taken this step to prioritize communal harmony and avoid any further disruptions during upcoming religious festivals. By implementing this temporary ban on processions, they aim to foster an environment of peace and tranquillity in the region.
