Sambalpuri Handloom Products Set to Receive Coveted GI Tag

Sambalpur: During an event at IIM Sambalpur campus, Roop Rashi, the Textile Commissioner of India, announced that the Ministry of Textiles is taking steps to grant Geographical Indication (GI) status to Sambalpuri handloom products. This move aims to protect and promote the much-loved Sambalpuri sarees, shawls, dresses, and bedsheets.

The training program on small-scale business management, attended by veteran weavers, was graced by Roop Rashi as the chief guest. This initiative signifies the government’s commitment to support and uplift the weavers’ community in the region.

Dr Subhransu Sekhar Acharya, the CGM of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), also participated in the program and emphasized their organization’s approach to cluster development for the veteran weavers of Sambalpur.

With the potential GI tag, Sambalpuri handloom products will gain recognition and protection in the market, further boosting the traditional craft and empowering the skilled artisans in Odisha. This move by the Ministry of Textiles is expected to enhance the visibility of these unique handcrafted products, both nationally and internationally.
