Djokovic Starts Strong at French Open, Eyes 23rd Grand Slam Title

Paris: Novak Djokovic commenced his quest for a men’s record 23rd Grand Slam singles title with a convincing straight-sets triumph over Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of the French Open. The Serbian tennis star, a two-time Roland Garros champion, showcased his prowess on Court Philippe Chatrier, fending off a late challenge from his American opponent to secure a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7/1) victory. This win extends Djokovic’s remarkable streak of never losing his opening match of a major since the 2006 Australian Open.

In his post-match interview, Djokovic expressed his strong motivation to have a lengthy stay in the tournament, emphasizing that this is just the beginning of his campaign. While he is content with his solid start, he remains determined to further enhance his performance in the upcoming matches.

Next up, the 36-year-old Serbian will face Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the second round. Djokovic has previously emerged victorious in all four of their encounters, giving him added confidence going into the match.

Despite the absence of his long-standing rival and 14-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal due to injury, Djokovic finds himself seeded third at this year’s tournament. The top seed position is held by world number one Carlos Alcaraz, followed by Daniil Medvedev.

Currently tied with Nadal for the most men’s Grand Slam singles trophies, Djokovic trails Serena Williams by just one title and Margaret Court, who holds the all-time record of 24.
