Twitter Officially Rebrands as ‘X’ on Android and iOS; ‘Tweets’ Now ‘Posts’

Twitter, under Elon Musk’s ownership, has undergone a significant rebrand, now known as “X.” Musk claims the platform has reached new heights with over 540 million monthly users, a substantial increase from the reported 229 million in May 2022. Since taking over in November 2022, Musk has implemented various changes, including a 50% workforce reduction and appointing Linda Yaccarino as CEO. However, Twitter continues to grapple with advertisement revenue challenges.

As part of the rebrand, the mobile application icon on Android and iOS platforms has been updated to reflect the letter “X.” Additionally, user content, previously called “tweets,” is now referred to as “posts.” Twitter 10.1.0-beta.1 version appears on some Android devices as “X Beta,” while the apk file retains its original name.

Musk’s rebranding vision aims to shed old elements of Twitter, moving closer to building “the Everything App.” Despite his ambitious goals, potential legal issues could arise due to the widely used letter “X.” Rival social media platform Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, holds a federal trademark for a blue-and-white letter “X” in software and social media fields. Microsoft also owns an “X” trademark related to its Xbox video game system.

Legal experts suggest that companies might not take legal action unless Twitter’s use of “X” threatens their established brand equity. It’s worth noting that Meta faced legal challenges when it rebranded from Facebook and introduced its infinity-symbol logo, settling with investment firm Metacapital and virtual-reality company MetaX.
