Shreyas Iyer to Return to Ranji Trophy Amid Uncertainty Over BCCI Contract

Mumbai: Shreyas Iyer is set to make a comeback in the Ranji Trophy semi-final for Mumbai after recovering from back spasms that sidelined him from the quarter-final against Baroda. Ishan Kishan also returned to competitive cricket, participating in the DY Patil T20 tournament for the Reserve Bank of India.

Both Iyer and Kishan have recently been in the spotlight following comments from India captain Rohit Sharma emphasizing the importance of players who “have the hunger” to excel in Test cricket.

Iyer, initially selected for the first two Tests against England, was dropped for the subsequent matches. Meanwhile, Kishan’s absence from domestic cricket and his brief hiatus has raised questions about his commitment to the longer format of the game.

Iyer, who missed the quarter-final as a precaution, will mark his second appearance in the Ranji Trophy this season, bolstering Mumbai’s lineup for the crucial semi-final against Tamil Nadu. His return addresses concerns over recurring injury issues, particularly after undergoing back surgery last year.

Kishan’s absence has paved the way for others in the Test arena, with players like KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel earning opportunities in his place. Kishan’s recent training stint with Hardik Pandya suggests his focus may be more geared towards shorter formats of the game, potentially impacting his Test prospects in the future.
