Wild Elephant Tramples Woman to Death in Sundargarh Dist

Sundargarh: A wild elephant trampled a woman to death in the wee hours of Saturday at Ushumundi village under the Koida Range in Sundargarh district.

The deceased was identified as Itawari Bhadra.

A herd of wild elephants strayed into the village on Friday night. In the wee hours, Bhadra, who was sleeping at her home, woke up hearing the sounds of elephants.

When she came out of the house to look around, one of the elephants chased her and crushed her to death.

Receiving information, forest department officials reached the spot to seize the body for post-mortem.

According to official reports, in 2022-2023, as many as 150 people died in human-elephant conflict in Odisha. As many as 996 people died in elephant attacks in Odisha between 2013 and 2023. During the same period, 794 elephants died in the state due to human-elephant conflicts.
