Cholera Confirmed in Rourkela: CM Naveen Patnaik to Assess Crisis Today

Rourkela: In the wake of a diarrhoea outbreak claiming six lives in Rourkela, laboratory tests conducted on Tuesday confirmed the presence of cholera, prompting heightened health concerns. Rourkela has witnessed six reported deaths and 500 individuals hospitalized with diarrhoea and vomiting symptoms. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is set to assess the cholera situation with senior officials today.

Stool samples sent to Sundargarh revealed cholera and some cases of E. Coli, as confirmed in reports received on Monday. RGH Superintendent Sudharani Pradhan emphasized the importance of consuming ORS, practicing proper hand hygiene, and urged awaiting the death audit report for conclusive information on the cause of deaths.

The test results indicated the presence of Vibrio cholera bacteria. The Commissioner of Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) reported a notable improvement in the situation, with diarrhoea cases decreasing in some areas. To bolster the response, ten additional doctors and paramedical staff, including epidemiologists from Sundargarh and Bhubaneswar, have been deployed.

WATCO has repaired 36 water pipeline leakages in various Rourkela locations, contributing to water safety efforts. RMC remains vigilant, conducting continuous checks on food and water samples from affected areas.
