PM Modi to Lead International Yoga Day Session at United Nations

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be leading a yoga session at the United Nations Secretariat on June 21 to mark International Yoga Day, as announced by UN Resident Coordinator in India, Shombi Sharp.

The United Nations designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 to promote the benefits of yoga worldwide.

Yoga has gained universal appeal and is recognized for its positive impact on mental health, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. The popularity of International Yoga Day has grown, with 175 member states endorsing the resolution.

India, a major contributor to UN Peacekeeping, proposed the establishment of the International Day of Yoga and has actively supported it since its inception. Prime Minister Modi introduced the proposal during the 69th session of the General Assembly, highlighting the unity of mind, body, and action that yoga embodies.

In addition to leading the yoga session, Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the United Nations holds special significance. The event emphasizes the need for mindfulness, mental health, and the holistic approach that yoga offers.

During a seminar commemorating 75 years of UN Peacekeeping, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for the expansion of the United Nations Security Council with India as a permanent member. He emphasized the importance of adapting UN bodies to the current realities of our age and making them more democratic and representative.

UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp acknowledged the need for reform and adaptation within the United Nations to remain relevant in today’s world. He highlighted India’s strong qualifications for Security Council membership, recognizing the country’s significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts.
