Cuttack: Tragedy struck Kuranga Pradhan village in Cuttack district on Monday as two minor girls drowned in a local pond. A third girl, who went missing during the incident, was fortunately rescued by villagers and is now receiving medical attention.
The deceased girls have been identified as Safia Khatun and Nandini Kumari, while the rescued girl’s identity remains unknown at this time, according to a senior police official at the Sadar police station.
Initial reports suggest the three minors ventured to the pond for a swim earlier in the day. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it is believed they slipped into the deeper parts of the water, leading to the two drownings.
Local residents played a vital role in the rescue effort, bravely pulling one of the girls from the water after an hour-long struggle. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
Upon receiving news of the incident, a Sadar police team promptly reached the scene and retrieved the bodies. An unnatural death (U/D) case has been registered, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is underway.
