Bhubaneswar Man Arrested for Setting Grocery Shop Ablaze Over Credit Dispute

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a man was arrested by the Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar for allegedly setting a grocery shop on fire in the Chandaka area of the city on Tuesday night.

According to reports, the man, identified as Sadasiba Swain (35) had purchased groceries worth Rs 130 on credit from the shop owned by Ranjit Kumar Sahoo a few days prior to the incident. When Sahoo requested payment on Tuesday evening, Swain allegedly threatened him with violence.

The situation escalated later that night when Swain reportedly set Sahoo’s shop on fire while Sahoo was still inside. Thankfully, Sahoo managed to escape the blaze unharmed. However, the fire caused extensive damage to the shop and destroyed groceries valued at over Rs 1 lakh.

Following the incident, Sahoo filed a complaint with the Chandaka police. The police arrested Swain and registered a case against him under Sections 436 (mischief by fire or by explosive substance with intent to cause damage to property), 307 (attempt to murder), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
