Suryakumar Yadav Named Captain of Star-Studded ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year

The flamboyant middle-order batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, has been appointed as the captain of the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year. The team also includes three other talented Indians: opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, spinner Ravi Bishnoi, and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh.

The ICC Team of the Year acknowledges 11 exceptional individuals who have showcased outstanding performances with the bat, ball, or all-round contributions throughout the year.

Suryakumar Yadav secured his place in the side for the second consecutive year and is a strong contender for the T20I Men’s Cricketer of the Year. The Mumbai-based right-handed batsman had an impressive 2023, overcoming a modest start with a mere seven runs against Sri Lanka. However, he quickly rebounded with scores of 51 (36) and an unbeaten 112 (51) in the next two matches.

Consistently contributing with scores in the 20s to 40s, Suryakumar showcased his class with a remarkable innings of 83 (44) against the West Indies in Providence. He concluded the series with another impactful knock of 61 (45) in Florida.

Suryakumar Yadav took on the responsibility of captaining the Indian side in the latter part of the year when Rohit Sharma took a break. His leadership was complemented by half-centuries against Australia (80 off 42 balls) and South Africa (56 off 36 balls), culminating in a century (100 off 56 balls) against South Africa in Johannesburg in the final T20I of the year.

Joining the Indian quartet in the 11-member team are England’s Phil Salt, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran as wicket-keeper, Mark Chapman of New Zealand, Sikandar Raza from Zimbabwe, Uganda’s all-rounder Alpesh Ramjani, Ireland’s Mark Adair, and Richard Ngarava from Zimbabwe.
