Cyber Fraud Cheating Through OLX Ad Arrested in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A cyber fraudster was arrested by the Commissionerate Police, Bhubaneswar on Thursday on charges of cheating through online OLX advertisements.

According to a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bhubaneswar, the arrested accused was Dhirendra Kumar Jena alias Dhiren (37) of Sahaspur under Jajpur Sadar police station limits in Jajpur district.

Jena allegedly cheated Suraj Xess (26) of Gandasrirampur, Tankapani Road under Badagada police limits of Rs 27,500 through an advertisement on OLX. Suraj lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime and Economic Offence police station on November 13 about it.

The accused and his associates publish advertisements in newspapers and online platforms regarding rooms on rent. When people contact them, they share fake photos and videos of rooms. They extract money as advance from their victims by saying advance should be uploaded to their account as early as possible otherwise the room will be allotted to some other person.

Investigation revealed that Jena and his associates had cheated several others in Bhubaneswar through similar OLX advertisements. Till now 10 reports of similar frauds have been have been tagged, said the release.

Arrested Jena has past criminal record at Jajpur Sadar police station, the release said. Eight SIM Cards, two different bank passbooks, two ATM cards were seized from Jena’s possession.

An investigation is on to nab associates of Jena.
