Odia Autorickshaw Driver Donates Liver of Brain-Dead Daughter to Unknown Recipient in Delhi

Bhubaneswar: Dukhabandhu Mahanta, an auto-rickshaw driver from Keonjhar, and his wife Banita opted for an exemplary deed on Friday by donating the liver of their 14-year-old daughter.  Authorities of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar commended their remarkable. It also was a significant achievement for AIIMS-Bhubaneswar surgeons as they conducted the institution’s first Deceased Donor Organ Retrieval.

The liver extracted from the brain-dead child was transported to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi by air.

A green corridor was created from the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar to the Biju Patnaik International Airport for the timely transportation of liver.

Banita and Dukhabandhu Mahant are from Keonjhar district and are currently residing at Bhubaneswar. Their daughter was suffering from chronic kidney disease and was under dialysis for the last few months.

Following a brain stroke she was admitted to the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on 15 February. Later on she went into coma and was declared brain dead by the expert committee from AIIMS Bhubaneswar after doing a series of Apnoea tests.

The parents of the brain-dead girl gave consent to donate the organs to save the life of another person battling for life. The expert surgeons retrieved her liver. AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas led the entire liver retrieval process. He conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the brave parents for the great humanitarian gesture as well as the entire transplant team.
