Hirakud Dam Releases First Floodwater of the Year Amid Heavy Rainfall

Sambalpur: Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district has initiated the first floodwater release this year. The dam authorities decided to open sluice gate number 7 due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, resulting in rising water levels. As a precautionary measure, four more gates will be opened later to release additional floodwater.

The release of water from the Hirakud Dam is expected to cause an increase in the water level of the Mahanadi River and its distributaries in the lower catchments. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions while approaching water bodies during this time.

The decision to release floodwater aims to manage the reservoir’s water levels and prevent potential risks posed by excess water accumulation. By taking these measures, the authorities are ensuring the safety and well-being of the local communities downstream.
