Joranda Mela 2024: A Spectacle of Religious Devotion Begins Today

Dhenkanal: The annual Joranda Mela, also known as the Magha Mela, kicked off on Thursday at Mahima Gadi in Joranda, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors. This three-day festival, celebrated by the Mahima Sadhus, marks a significant event in the Mahima Dharma calendar.

The festival centres around the Mahima Gosain’s Samadhi Pitha within the Sunya Mandir temple. This temple, built in the early 20th century, stands on the site of a shrine dating back to the 14th century. Dedicated to the formless Lord Sunya Bramha, the temple eschews idol worship. A perpetual flame, the “Akhanda Dhuni,” lit by the saint himself, continues to burn within the temple grounds.

The Joranda Mela unfolds with vibrant rituals like the Jhadu and Kheera Lagi Neeti. Silver vessels carry water for sacred rituals, while gold utensils sprinkle sandalwood water. Seven grand offerings, known as “Bhog,” are presented to the deity, followed by special prayers for peace and prosperity.

A major highlight is the Havan (Yagya) held in the Yagna Kund. Thousands of liters of ghee are offered to the fire, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike. The “Bedha Parikrama” ritual, already observed on the first day, marks the circumambulation of the sacred space.

This year marks the 151st Joranda Mela, commemorating the life and legacy of Mahima Swami, or Mahima Gosain. In 1876, the saint chose Joranda as his final resting place, establishing it as the Mahima Gadi.

The Mela serves as an annual gathering for monks, saints and devotees to honour his teachings and celebrate the Mahima Dharma.
