Doctors get success in first lower limb salvage surgery in patient with bone cancer

Cuttack: For the first time in Odisha, doctors at HCG Panda Cancer Hospital, Cuttack, have performed a lower limb salvage surgery on a 13-year-old boy suffering from osteosarcoma (a type of cancer that starts from unstable cells) on his lower left leg. The surgery allowed doctors to remove the affected bone and replace it with prosthetics to protect the boy’s limb.

This unique surgery was performed by Dr. Jyot Ranjan Swamy, Surgical Oncologist, HCG Panda Cancer Hospital, Cuttack, Dr. Kshitish Mohanty, Orthopedic Oncologist, HCG Panda Cancer Hospital, Cuttack, and their medical team. When 13-year-old boy Chandra (name changed to protect his identity) was diagnosed with the disease, his father and mother were devastated. After the surgery, the patient recovered rapidly and started a rehabilitation program the following day, including assisted walking and physiotherapy.

If one experiences symptoms of cancer such as severe pain, noticeable swelling, lethargy, or unintentional weight loss, consult the nearest doctor immediately. However, as the patient can recover from a very painful disease like bone cancer with the above surgery, now the bone cancer patients have gained new hope in their minds. Further, if the patients suffering from this disease start their treatment while there is time, they too can be cured like the moon and live a healthy life, the treating experts and doctors have expressed their opinion.
